Comments: The Daisy 5501 is styled after the Brazilian Taurus Millenium Pro. It has a moveable metal slide (pseudo-blowback, see below) and a plastic frame. It is designed to shoot steel BBs from a 15-shot clip that loads into the grip. The trigger on this airgun is two-stage and the action is DA only. The trigger pull is long but light, measuring a  respectable 3.9 lb. When used with quality BBs, the Daisy 5501 is capable of respectable accuracy. It's too bad the rear sight isn't adjustable. The gun feels solid in your hand and points well. I would have preferred less of a gap in the rear sight. Daisy advertises this gun as having blowback action. The slide does blowback with each shot, after first cocking it, but the blowback has nothing to do with actually cocking and firing the gun. The gun will fire regardless of whether the slide has been cocked. There is a decocking lever, but this only disables the blowback action, it does not keep the gun from firing. In actuality, this gun is a simple DAO moving barrel design that is cocked and fired by pulling the trigger. The blowback action is simply an add-on for those wanting the feel of recoil. The Daisy manual says nothing about this and implies that pressing the decocking lever uncocks the gun. This is not true and represents a potential safety hazard for the unwary.

Performance: Measurements were made on 6/05/08 at a temperature of 74 ºF and 14' elevation. A ten shot string was fired from a bench rest at 15' using Daisy Avanti BBs (5.5 gr). The highest velocity measured was 406 fps, the lowest was 390 fps (average of the 10-shot string was 397 fps, s = 5). Velocities were similar with the blowback turned on and off. An eight shot string fired off-hand with open sights grouped at 1.03" (blowback turned on). Click the thumbnail below to see a larger image. Right Profile:
Sights: The front sight has a painted white dot. The rear sight is plain black. Neither sight is adjustable. The cocking indicator, visible through the cut-out at the back of the slide, indicates if the blowback action has been activated by first manually pulling the slide back. Pressing the decocking lever (nearest the rear of the gun) deactivates the blowback action -- it does not uncock the gun. The gun will fire when the trigger is pulled regardless of the position of the cocking indicator.
Front View:
Slide Locked: The safety is the lever nearest the front of the gun, followed by the slide lock lever and the decocking lever. The magazine release button is located just behind the trigger guard. Unlike many recently introduced BB guns made in Taiwan and Japan, these controls are not just cosmetic, they actually work.
Right Side Markings:
Left Side Markings:
Loading BBs: The 15-shot removable magazine has a lock for the spring follower. The magazine is made from thin plastic, so handle it carefully. The magazine must be removed to access the knurled nut that clamps the CO2 cylinder in place.
Loading CO2: Removing the left grip panel provides access to the CO2 loading chamber. The plastic grip panel is very thin, so be careful when taking it on and off.
