Comments: The Plainsman MA22 is .22 cal version of the Plainsman 9401. Unfortunately, its use of hard to find .22 cal lead-covered steel BBs limited its popularity. This makes the MA22 a rare find compared to the more commonly available standard Plainsman. Other than the use of .22 cal ammunition, the MA22 shares the same valve, trigger, and frame as the standard Plainsman. The double-action trigger has a long smooth pull with an indistinct break point. The barrel of the MA22 is slightly smaller in diameter than the barrel of the .22 cal Healthways Shorty. The MA22, therefore, cannot use the same ammunition as the Shorty. Steel shot or lead-covered steel shot is preferred with a diameter no greater than 0.215 inches.

Performance: Measurements were made on 4/05/08 at a temperature of 74 F and 14' elevation. A five shot string was fired from a bench rest at 15' using Benjamin .22 cal round air rifle shot (15.2 gr). The highest velocity measured was 310 fps (high power setting), the lowest was 264 fps (average of the 5-shot string was 300 fps, s = 20). A five shot string fired off-hand with open sights grouped at 0.76". Click the thumbnail below to see a larger image. Click here for a description of the measurement methods.

The performance tests were conducted using Benjamin round air rifle lead shot (.22 cal). The round shot was loaded, single shot, down the muzzle.

Right Profile: Like other Healthways Plainsman models, the MA22 comes with a 3-position power adjuster. Turning the slotted screw counter-clockwise increases the power.

Loading BBs: The Healthways Plainsman MA22 uses .22 cal lead-coated steel BBs. This type of ammunition is no longer in production. The Plainsman uses a magnet to hold the BB in the breech, therefore only steel BBs with a diameter no greater than 0.215 inches will work in this gun.

Loading CO2: The MA22 uses 8 g CO2 cartridges.
